My name is Kelsey Potoma. I am a fourth-year student in the Middle Year program at the University of Regina and I will be officially completed my degree in April 2021. I am from Estevan, Saskatchewan. I come from a family of four, me being the oldest of two kids.
Ever since I was younger, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. Most kids change their idea of what they want to be when they grow up. It starts with a princess or superhero. It turns into a doctor or firefighter, and maybe even a hairdresser. But for me, it wasn’t like that. Growing up, I would keep old school work and play school with my brother – and even by myself! Teaching the invisible students to walk in the “hallway” and to pay attention during an assembly. I even talked my grandparents into buying me a giant whiteboard and markers so I could hang it up and write on it like a real teacher.
Working and teaching children is something I have always been passionate about. Throughout the years I have coached swimming for the club that I swam with for 10+ years, coaching all different ages and different levels – beginning (Minis), pre-competitive and competitive and I have been fortunate enough to be able to come back to the sport that has taught me so much about how, not only to be an athlete but also how to be a teacher, a friend, and a well-rounded human. I have also worked at a theatre camp which was a true blessing because I was able to learn how to educate others while doing something that I was so passionate about. I also spent a few summers working with the City of Estevan as a Playpark Leader. This opportunity was different than the others but taught me more about how to educate children who are younger and not what I was used to.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my portfolio and I hope this helps you take a deeper look into who I am as a student and as an educator!
